OZAMIZ CITY—Independent senatorial candidate Ariel Querubin praised Mindanao’s economic growth on Monday, saying peace and security have paved the way for more tourists and investments in the region.
“Sa pag-iikot ko, napakaganda ng obserbasyon ko. Nung wala na yung terorista, dumami na yung turista,” Querubin said.

Querubin, a retired Marine officer, recalled his years of combat in Mindanao, where he earned one-third of his military medals. He led troops in the 2000 liberation of Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte, defeating over 300 MILF fighters, an operation that earned him the country’s highest military honor, the Medal of Valor.

Querubin also credited good governance and disciplined military for maintaining peace and order, which he said were key to sustaining development.
“The best antidote to insurgency, violent extremism, and even terrorism is good governance, aided by well-disciplined men in uniform,” Querubin said.
