BALAYAN, BATANGAS—Independent senatorial candidate Ariel Querubin stressed the need for legislation that will accelerate the modernization of the Philippine Coast Guard to better protect Filipino fishing vessels.
Querubin, a retired Marine officer and Medal of Valor awardee, met with local fisherfolk in Balayan, Batangas, on March 13 to discuss their concerns over Chinese harassment in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) and ways to improve their livelihood.
A local fisherfolk recalled their experiences of being harassed by the Chinese Coast Guard.

They noted how they could only enter traditional fishing grounds when no Chinese patrols were present.
“Nakakapasok lang tayo doon kapag walang bantay,” another fisherfolk said.

Querubin pointed out the imbalance in maritime presence in disputed waters.
